Getting Started - Boston Area Dancing LessonsIf you have plenty of time, you may want to start with a group class teaching some of the most popular wedding dances like the Foxtrot, Waltz and Rumba. These group classes meet on Monday evenings in the Waltham Studio and are a good way for the bride and groom or any member of the wedding party to learn some of the basic steps in these popular dances. We make it easy for you to sign up online too! If a series of private lessons is what you prefer, then just check out our private ballroom and latin dance lessons page and then contact us for special wedding package pricing. Choosing Music and creating your Wedding Dance Here is a list of popular wedding music for the bride and groom's first dance, the father-daughter dance and the mother-son dance. If you have picked out music for your first dance, you can bring your music to a private lesson. Most couples choose to take several private lessons to learn a customized dance routine to their music. You can decide how simple or elaborate you want your dance to be. You may want to add some spins and flourishes and end with a romantic dip. Or perhaps you prefer something simple and understated. It's up to you, but we can guide you and advise you every step of the way. Call or email us about our special wedding packages. How Much Time to Allow It is a good idea to give yourself plenty of time to learn to dance. You will look and feel more relaxed if you have had time to practice. A good time to start your lessons is at least two or three months before the wedding. You will be very busy as the wedding date approaches, so you don't want to wait until the last minute. However, if you are pressed for time, we can still teach you up to the week before the wedding. Fun for the Whole Family! Your family and members of the bridal party may want to take some lessons as well. We have some group classes that teach the most popular dances, or you can form your own group with your family and friends. We teach father/daughter and mother/son dances as well. We can also arrange for an instructor to teach at your reception or rehearsal. This is a great way to get everyone to mingle and get the party started!
What Suzanne's Students Say"In preparation for our First Dance as husband and wife, we took private classes with Suzanne Hamby. We chose a different kind of song, an old Tango. Suzanne was very excited and quickly choreographed a romantic First Dance for our wedding. We were so delighted by our experience that we continued to take private lessons upon our return from our honeymoon. During our classes we learned to dance in unison with grace to new types of music and most importantly, laughed a great deal. Suzanne is a joy to work with. She is kind, very knowledgeable, and truly enjoys teaching dance." - Ana and Hooman"Suzanne, "Hi Suzanne,
Frequently Asked QuestionsMy fiancé and I have never danced before. How long will it take to learn to dance? Most couples can learn to dance for their first dance in three to five lessons. If you would like a very simple first dance, you may need only one or two lessons. However, it is often hard for couples to find time to practice together, and so a few more lessons may make you feel more comfortable dancing together. If you would like to be able to dance some of the other popular dances that will be played by the band or DJ, you may want to take additional lessons to learn these dances as well. Some couples find that the lessons are so much fun, they decide to learn other dances! We haven't chosen a song. What should we do? We have a list of popular songs for your first dance, and we can also advise you if you have any questions. If you have several choices, bring all of them to your first lesson, and we can tell you which song we think would be the most appropriate. Remember, your song should be meaningful to you and not necessarily be what everyone else has chosen. So if you would like to do a passionate Tango, we can show you how.We waited until the last minute. Can you help us? Of course we can!! We can still make you look great. Don't hesitate to call, and we will fit you in for one or two lessons. You'll be amazed at how polished you will look after only one lesson. What should we wear to our lessons? Wear clothing you are comfortable in for your lessons. Ladies should wear something similar to the shoe you will be wearing for your wedding. Try to find a shoe with a similar heel height and style. Flip flops and mules are not a good choice for lessons. Men should wear a dress shoe with a leather sole rather than running shoes that tend to stick on the floor. Can my parents come and learn to dance? Many parents of the bride or groom decide to take a few lessons so they will feel more comfortable dancing at the reception. We can also arrange lessons for the father/daughter dance and the mother/son dance. If fact, we can teach everyone in the wedding party to dance. Many brides find the lessons with their father to be a special and emotional time together before the wedding. Please call if you have any special requests or concerns. We have been teaching since 1984, so we have over 20 years of experience making brides happy on their special day. More Wedding Dance Photos
